Little owl around entrance to clay pits still early this morning, hunting from fence posts and being mobbed by up to three blackbirds. Very quiet otherwise: three or four blackcaps and a couple of chiffchaffs still singing. Six swifts over Axbridge as I left the house.
I find it really quite upsetting that fellow human beings are treating our lovely countryside like this. Not only are they leaving rubbish but also defecating and urinating everywhere.SO PICK UP RUBBISH look after the countryside so that other people can enjoy themselves when they can.
Multiple swifts over the reservoir this AM, a single swallow, great crested grebe, greater black-backed gull and 2-3 black-headed gulls in fine summer plumage. Sadly not little owl to be seen and the banks/paths are strewn with quite horrific quantities of litter! :(
Not quite the res but 20 plus swifts over my road this evening just up from there
Red kite cruising back & forth over Batts Combe quarry about 10am & 3 greenfinch wheezing along the Strawberry Line section that goes past the reservoir.
Little owl again this morning, first I’ve seen here for several years
The little owl was on the fence along south edge of reservoir about 10am before flying off into the trees. 3 GC grebe on water & 2 swift over axbridge.
Middle Moor Lane this AM, 2 Blackcaps, Green woody, and 3 Mistle Thrush diving at a Magpie in a tree and forcing it out of it,and 2 M T ‘s further down the lane near where the two horses are
The waders had already disappeared by yesterday morning & only 2 GC grebes seen (on opposite sides). There are 4 small ducklings (the other was hiding behind Cheddar tower) - both broods seen.
Very quiet this morning apart from peregrine over, north to south, and, very exciting for me at least, a little owl in the oaks around the entrance to the old clay pits (fishing lakes): first I have seen here for many years.
Greenshank still on west side this evening & 7 Sanderling on south (from near full winter to full summer plumage). 12 GC grebe on S & 4 on E. 4 medium mallard ducklings & 3+ small.
Possible juvenile little stint this morning, as well as the Greenshank on the Middle Moor Lane side, also several Mistle Thrush active in the lane ,two Blackcap and a Bullfinch
Well, Neville, at around 6:30 I only saw one wader this morning and it brightened a dull and otherwise quiet morning because it was a very fine greenshank along the south bank; it called two or three times and was quite wary but appeared to be finding plenty to eat. If the other waders were in front of the clubhouse then I would have missed them because I turned off to go along the Strawberry Line.
Other birds of note: reed warbler singing from ditch beyond Portmeade Drove (west bank) and willow warbler still in scrub between east bank and Strawberry Line.
Hi Kim, i was on the opposite side of the res, with the Schnauzers [ non feathered !!]
