2 this afternoon just outside Norton church yard. A bit more surprising was a little egret in the trees above the stream in the middle of the village. Good but distant views in excellent light
At least one Hawfinch in the trees around the churchyard of St Peter & St Paul Church, Shepton Mallet on the mornings of the 26th & 27th of December. Wasn’t able to find any when I looked initially on each occasion, but eventually one flew in & landed in tall trees in adjoining gardens, before going into yew trees to feed. Many greenfinches & chaffinches also feeding in the trees, so difficult to locate the Hawfinch among the other birds.
Thanks for the update. Three in the churchyard today, plus a group of redpolls and greenfinches.
And the Hawfinches are still there in the yew in the cemetery and across the road in the yews in the church grounds.
At least 2 Hawfinches still in the Church Yard of St Michaels Church in Somerton at lunchtime today .
Perching high up in canopy of tallest tree but in excellent light,
Thank you Chris for your earlier post
One of Chris Chappell’s photos has been addedd to the Gallery.
Small flocks of hawfinches feeding in the St Michael’s churchyard, Somerton over the past three days, hard to count as either very high or hidden, but would say at least 6 on Friday. Plus greenfinches, chaffinches, goldcrests, LT tits, redwing, fieldfare, GS woodpecker and all corvids around.
Hi Chris, I assume that it was you that I met on Wood Lane and who gave me the heads up on the Hawfinch. No sign when I got there but, whilst searching, a large flock of small birds swept through. Mostly Blue, Long Tailed and Great Tits but also. a few Coal Tit and Goldcrest and at least one each of Nuthatch and Treecreeper.
Hawfinch in yew trees in our garden in Aller
A single Hawfinch this morning in trees along Wood Lane, Butleigh, about 200m west of the Rose & Portcullis
I saw at least 5 Hawfinch at Fyne Court this morning, others saw 7. Also a nice male Brambling giving me 2 new birds for 2017 in the same tree! Also Nuthatch and a Grey Wagtail there. Later at Steart, a Greenshank was the only wader of note.
Still at least four Hawfinches at Fyne Court, showing on and off in trees around the cafe, mixing with a flock of greenfinch which also included a Male Brambling.
Another weekend, another churchyard, another Hawfinch: Crewkerne Cemetery this morning. 1 Hawfinch high in a beech tree near the entrance. Unlike Norton last weekend where a bird seemed to fly over every 5 minutes or so, I was present quite a while with no sign and was about to leave when I spotted this bird perched.
Visited Norton-sub-Hamdon this afternoon to see if the Hawfinch invasion had brought birds there. I only saw one bird at a time in flight but saw it five times and got the impression that more than one bird was involved. I didn’t see it (them?) perched at any time. All sightings around the churchyard area.
One female seen today feeding on yew berries in the grounds of Stocklinch church.
