Thank you all, please do keep posting sightings of colour ringed GWE! We weren’t able to ring any this year but monitoring is ongoing, and we hope for more accessible nests next year. More info on Ham Wall blog Nov 2019.
A GWE bearing a red ring ,code AAM was at Durleigh res. on Friday 21/09 /18 .
An update on some of this year’s youngsters - AAJ was seen at Sandwich Bay, Kent, on 23rd July and AAH was seen yesterday on Dungeness RSPB Reserve!
Hi Amy
Ringed bird ,white on red.left leg AAF. Metal ring on right leg just above ankle.
Flying at Loxtons Ham Wall yesterday. 30/5/17.

Still on Skye but is not a Somerset bird and was apparently ringed as one of 250 pulli in Belarus 2200km east in 2012!
Hi Nigel,
This is an exciting sighting! I am couldnt be sure if it was one of ours though, as we would have to see the ring number to confirm, which would be difficult! I wouldnt rule it out though, as there were a couple with just metals on the right leg as were too small for colour rings.
It would be amazing if one had ended up in Scotland.
All the best,
Amy

Hi Bob,
Sorry for the slow reply, I have been away.
This is great news, thanks for letting us know, we haven’t seen that bird for a while, so it is good to know it is still alive!
I will add it to the records, and if you see it again let us know so we can confirm the ID.
All the best,
Amy
Hi Amy. Thought you might like to know that one of last years ringed birds was at Loxtons last Tuesday,3/1. I counted 13 birds at 3pm, there were probably more than that there. When I processed my pics I noticed that one bird in flight was ringed, white letters on red. I’m pretty sure it was AAC, but not100% def.

Sorry Ami, Closer inspection reveals that the bird is AAF !
Thanks Bob!
As I said below, only three were colour ringed. But altogether 10 fledged this year, 9 on Ham Wall and 1 on Shapwick Heath. The best year yet, so we are looking forward to seeing how next year will compare!
All the best,
Amy

Hi Amy. White on red AAC seen today at durleigh reservoir.
How many did you ring, and how many fledged this year?
Bob
Hi,
I just wanted to highlight to people who may not be aware, that a couple of us successfully colour ringed a number of the great white egret chicks this year around the Ham Wall site. This is a first for the UK and we hope to learn a great deal about this population as the scheme continues.Three fledged juveniles now have a red colour ring with an engraved white three letter alpha code on the left leg. AAA, AAC and AAF are the codes we have used so far. A few of you have reported these indivduals to me since they have fledged, but I would be extremely grateful to receive any future sightings.
Thank you!
